Stranger Than Fiction
Stranger Than Fiction.
The interesting aspect about this episode is the character of Emily Weiss,
a writer of vampire tales who is so close to the truth, it's not funny.
Lacroix is not impressed; in fact he reminds Nick that she is a danger to
their kind and needs to be dealt with. The irony is that poor repressed
Emily doesn't know how close she is to the truth. When she first sees Nick
Knight in the police station after having been attacked by what appears to
be a vampire, she seems distracted by him. The ever suspicious Nick becomes
worried by this undue interest and fears Miss Weiss may know what he is.
What he fails to realise, and something to which Natalie alludes,is that
Nick is very attractive.Emily sees in him all that she fantasizes about
through the medium of her books - a strong, handsome, fearless and
consuming man who will kill her to keep her.Emily has had the unfortunate
experience of a weak man committing suicide, something for which she blames
herself. It is not surprising then that she becomes infatuated by Nick - he
is all that she wants and responds to. She doesn't need a weak man and
therefore fails to recognise the desires of one of her publisher's
assistants, who wants her so much that he is prepared to adopt the persona
of one of Emily's fictional vampires to gain her love and attention, even
if it means her death. It is not long, however, before the real vampire
regonises the false one:
"I am what you pretend to be!"
Lacroix , ever on the scene ,expects Nick to fulfil his obligation and kill
Emily.Fortunately for Emily, Nick is able to resist a situation that is
made for a vampire- she is truly a "lucky girl" It is ironic that Lacroix
killed a man who had pretended to be something he wasn't - a vampire- and
Emily loved a man who pretended ,through his job as a policeman to be
something he wasn't a vampire.
