Encounter of the Crazy Kind by PJ October 2004 “Anyone near Yonge and Richmond, please respond”, the voice from dispatch sounded from the speaker. Nick reached for the radio. “81 KILO responding.” “Officers reported a suspicious car cruising the streets, taking odd turns. It has been described as a white Chevrolet Impala with four passengers.” Nick stopped at a red light as he saw the car in question pass across the intersection. “Dispatch, I’ve just spotted them. I’ll start on the pursuit immediately”, he informed dispatch and turned into Richmond. The car in front of him seemed to be a rental, he observed. He furrowed his brows as the car turned left into Duncan. An uncomfortable feeling formed in his gut as the car stopped in front of the Raven. He parked at the curb as well and sat tensely, watching for what might happen next. Suddenly the doors of the car opened and four darkly clad figures stormed out. Nick prepared himself to intervene as he expected them to pull out guns any minute. Instead three of them posed in front of the Raven’s entrance, while the fourth pulled out a camera to take a photo. Nick watched stunned as they headed back into the car and drove off. What should he make of this? Were they hunters perhaps, gathering evidence of his kind, to be turned against him at a later time? Concerned he pulled off the curb and followed the car anew. It turned into Adelaide, heading east, then north onto Yonge again. He felt a slight panic creep up inside him as the car made another sharp turn into Grenville Street. His eyes bulged as the car stopped in front of the Coroner’s Building. The same odd scene repeated itself, as four girls emerged from the car, posed in front of the building, took a picture, and headed back into the car. This was getting weird, Nick thought. Perhaps he should alert security, but he had the distinct feeling that this had more to do with him than posing a threat towards the pathology department. His thoughts were interrupted as the car moved from the curb and took a right turn onto Bay Street. He followed them north until they reached Bloor Street, where they headed east. After crossing the Don Valley Parkway the car turned southwards into Broadview. Nick swallowed. He had an odd foreboding what the next stop might be. They were heading directly towards his loft. But this time they did not get out, they only passed it slowly, before heading on towards Lake Shore Blvd. He followed until they turned into a parking lot at Simcoe, close to the CN Tower. They left the car and crossed the street towards the tower. Nick stepped out of his own car and raised his eyes to where the CN Tower usually stood in all its beauty. This night however he could only see a part of the shaft while the observation platform remained obscured in the mist. Why would anyone venture on top of the tower when there is nothing to see, he wondered. He watched as the group purchased tickets and waited for the elevator to take them to the top. There must be some sort of conspiracy going on, he thought, and took to the air. Hovering in the humid air that surrounded the observation deck, he watched as the four girls stepped out of the elevator. They headed for the windows, squinting their eyes, desperately trying to make out anything in the fog. Then they headed into the bar where they sat down at a table. Nick had seen enough and decided to acquaint his sire with the possible threat these girls presented to their kind. He landed in front of the Raven. After entering he made his way directly to the soundbooth in the back of the club where he sensed the presence of his master. Lacroix looked up from his microphone as he felt the approach of his son. “Nicholas, what brings you here on this fine evening?”, he inquired, amusedly taking in Nicholas’ dripping exterior that probably derived from flying through unpleasant weather. “I have been following four people and I suspect them to be hunters”, Nick explained. “And how do you come to that conclusion, Nicholas?”, the elder inquired, gazing at his son over steepled fingers. “They stopped at every place related to me”, Nick said and gave a short account of his observations. Lacroix shot him a piercing glare. “And as usual you assume that this is about you”, he said. “Of course it is”, Nick insisted. “Why else would anyone visit all these places?” Lacroix gave him an annoying glance and rose from his seat. “Very well, Nicholas”, he said with a sigh. “Let’s take a closer look at your suspects.” He preceded Nick towards the exit. They took to the air and landed beside the car that was still parked where it had been left. “A rental?”, Lacroix asked and tried the doors but they were locked. Nick grabbed the door handle, applied a little force and pulled the entire door from the car. Lacroix raised his eyebrows at his son’s destructive methods. Bending down into the interior, he gave the car a brief survey. His eyes settled on a small silver cassette player that was connected to a set of speakers. He removed it to take a better look. Then he pressed the ‘play’ button. “Three weeks in this town and I still haven’t seen my old friend”, his own voice sounded from the speaker. Nick gave him an astonished gaze. “Nicholas, I believe we are dealing with a crowd of crazy fans here”, Lacroix informed him in a calm voice. “What?”, Nick asked confused. “They simply enjoy cruising the streets while listening to my show and I doubt that they will approve of the damage you have inflicted on their car.” Nick swallowed. “I would advise you to contact Larry Merlin immediately in order to check if your insurance covers something like this”, the elder continued. Nick watched dumbfounded as Lacroix rose into the sky. FIN _______________________ PJ blue_Twingo772@yahoo.de --------------------------------- Gesendet von Yahoo!
