In January, to be precise, at the party the Knighties had thrown at the loft, when he’d come downstairs, sensing an Enforcer in the building. Everyone had been delighted to see him—well, except for Ron, who’d been understandably wary—though he’d never quite caught everyone’s names before retreating back upstairs to his bedroom. The light changed, and he eased the Caddy into the intersection, waiting while the pedestrian crossed in front of him before making the turn. “Nick, what’s wrong?” asked Tracy, as he continued along Queen Street. “That woman back there, did you recognize her?” “No,” said Tracy, looking puzzled. “You haven’t heard anything from any of the Perks, have you?” “To be honest, they don’t seem to be up to much nowadays.” Nick could not quite tell if Tracy’s tone indicated relief. He rather thought not. “You thought she was a Perk?” Tracy said, suddenly realizing what Nick was driving at. “Are you nuts? She didn’t even glance at your car. Any of the fans would recognize it.” This was, of course, so obviously true that Nick felt a complete idiot. The woman had crossed the road right under the nose of the Caddy and not blinked. Oh, that was... ...a disappointment? He was, after all, very fond of his Knighties, even if they did punctuate his life with the oddest of disruptions. “Nick, what’s going on?” Tracy asked. “Are you telling me...? Have you heard anything about another War?”
